Culture Surge presents the artwork of Yuzly Mathurin, Grace Manga, and Diyah Najah, a rapid response to the 2020 post-election results.
As a Harvard-trained historian, Carter G. Woodson believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice. His hopes to raise awareness of African American’s contributions to civilization was realized when he founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The mission of ASALH® is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.
February marks Black History Month, a time when we recognize the importance of black history, and the contributions of African Americans to our history and culture. With our collective efforts, we must strive to celebrate these amazing achievements every single day.
In 2020, Culture Surge in partnership with Harness, shined a spotlight on the work of artists Yuzly Mathurin, Grace Manga, and Diyah Najah. The Future is Ours: A Rapid Response To Post-Election was curated by artist Courtney Brooks and filmed by Colbie Fray. The work of these incredible women bring to light the reality of being Black and Brown in today’s America. Yuzly, Grace, and Diyah share a collective fight to remain unapologetic and ‘transcend past election results‘ to ensure that the future remains in their hands no matter who holds office.
“We already know what a black woman can do, but when black women come together that amplifies our voices while doing work…we are a force to be reckoned with. Not only We deserve to be here, we deserve to be celebrated for it. Unapologetic, and transcending while we stay winning no matter what. The journey continues as we respond to post-election 2020 through our art and or truth.”– Courtney Brooks
