We’re thrilled to spotlight the latest single from South Africa-born, Portugal-based singer-songwriter Alice Phoebe Lou. Following her critically acclaimed 2023 album “Shelter,” Alice returns with “The World Above,” a single that beautifully captures her signature blend of vulnerability and strength.
Recorded between Tropico Beauty in Los Angeles and Freedom Studio Infinity in Tokyo, “The World Above” reflects a global journey and universal themes. Alice’s self-reflective lyrics paired with celestial keys and cascading guitars create a soundscape that is both uplifting and profound. This track features contributions from David Parry on guitar, Dekel Adin on bass, and Ziv Yamin on drums and keys, with Parry also taking on the role of producer.
“This song feels like a hand reaching down and pulling me up from the abyss, helping me rise to the surface after a difficult time,” shares Alice. “I wrote it in a moment of intense self-reflection as I began embracing who I am, loosening from the grips of addictions and feeling as though I am enough. It’s a celebration of self and acknowledgment of the paradox of our depths and darkness as well as our infinite lightness.”
Alice’s journey as an artist began as a busker in Berlin after moving from South Africa in 2012. Her debut album “Orbit” in 2016 marked the beginning of a promising career, followed by “Paper Castles” in 2019, which solidified her reputation as a musician to watch. Her subsequent albums, “Glow” and “Child’s Play” in 2021, allowed Alice to delve deep into personal and painful themes, resonating deeply with her audience.
“Shelter,” her fifth album, shifts to a tone of forgiveness and self-acceptance, creating a safe space for her listeners. Alice describes “Shelter” as more self-assured and direct, capturing moments of purging emotions and a second coming-of-age. Through her music, Alice continually strives to show the beauty of vulnerability and the importance of feeling all emotions.
Alice Phoebe Lou remains fiercely independent, a beacon of inspiration for young people to pursue their paths unconventionally. “The World Above” is a testament to her journey and artistic evolution, offering a hopeful and confident message wrapped in her ethereal sound.
